Other People's Shoes

👟👟Step Into the Unknown👟👟

In 1969, Neil Armstrong left a footprint on the Moon and uttered the iconic words,

“That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

His step reminds us that entering new spaces can transform travelers and the world around them.

🚀👟

What Is Other People’s Shoes?

My podcast is a launchpad to empathy.
Each week, I explore the perspectives of individuals from all walks of life, uncovering their challenges, triumphs, and lessons.

Whether navigating self-discovery, overcoming adversity, or finding purpose, the goal is to reveal the heart of the human experience.

At Other People’s Shoes, I invite you on a similar journey not to the Moon, but into the lives of others.

Imagine lacing up someone else’s shoes, stepping into their world, and discovering the stories that shape their lives.

Like an astronaut exploring uncharted terrain, I seek to understand, connect, and learn from the vast expanse of human experience.

🚀👟

🚀 🚀 Ready for Liftoff? 🚀 🚀
Join me as we take one small step together into someone else’s world.
It might just be the giant leap your perspective has been waiting for.

🚀👟

Every journey starts with a single step even if it’s into shoes that aren’t your own.

Another Knock At The Door

Imagine this for a moment: it’s Saturday afternoon. The week has been long, and you’ve finally carved out some time for yourself. You’re in your favorite cozy spot in the living room—maybe it’s the couch that perfectly hugs you or that recliner that’s seen better days but feels just right. You’ve got the TV on, ready to catch up on your favorite show, and for a moment, everything feels perfect. And then it happens. Alexa’s voice cuts through your peaceful bubble: “Someone is at the front door.” Annoyed, you groan, thinking, “Who could it be now?” Maybe it’s a neighbor, or worse—a salesperson. You grudgingly get up, annoyed at the interruption. You’re already rehearsing your response: “No, I’m not interested. I don’t care what you’re selling!” Well, it's my guest Nathan! Nathan & his wife Amber (Amber's past guest) walked away from in their words Jehovah's Witness, cult. Join me as I try on Nathan's Shoes.

The Choice

My choice, my body...What about the baby...I believe in life...What if the most challenging part wasn’t the choice itself—but facing who you are afterward? Abortion. A word heavy with controversy, pain, and shame. But for some, the struggle isn’t just about the choice—it’s about "who they are" in its aftermath. This week, Tonya Bailey Jones shares her journey of shame, self-doubt, and finally, self-acceptance. After decades of living behind a mask, she can now say with confidence: "I am Tonya Bailey Jones… and I love who that is". Join me as I walk in Tonya’s shoes.

Loathing

Loathing...The Duke vs. UNC rivalry is the sports equivalent of Loathing from Wicked—a relationship built on deep-seated animosity, unwavering contempt, and just a hint of begrudging respect. Much like Elphaba and Glinda’s cutting yet strangely harmonious duet, the Tar Heels and Blue Devils are forever intertwined, each defining the other through decades of battles on the hardwood. Every season, the Cameron Crazies' sneers and the Dean Dome’s roars echo the song’s theatrical vitriol—"Every little trait, however small, makes my very flesh begin to crawl!"—a sentiment any UNC fan can relate to when spotting Duke’s blue and white on the court. My guest today is Andy Bagwell. Andy Bagwell, co-author of Duke Sucks: A Completely Even-Handed, Unbiased Investigation into the Most Evil Team on Planet Earth, captured this dynamic perfectly, dissecting Duke’s infamous flopping, smug superiority, and, of course, their uncanny ability to get every foul call.

Lemons Into Tamales

Which would you rather indulge in, lemons or tamales? I feel like it's a pretty easy choice, right? Life has a way of throwing challenges at us when we least expect it. Sometimes, it feels like all we have are lemons—sour, bitter, and hard to swallow. But what if, instead of making lemonade, we made something heartier, something rich with culture, love, and perseverance—like tamales? In this episode, I sit down with Leslie Alvarez, a woman whose life is a testament to resilience, hustle, and the power of staying true to oneself. From a young age, Leslie learned the value of hard work and determination. Whether it was selling homemade oatmeal cookies to buy a bike or making tamales to support her family, she embraced the philosophy: “Where there is a will, there is always a way.” This mantra has carried her through some of life’s toughest moments. Leslie’s journey is one of incredible highs and devastating lows—financial struggles, relationship breakdowns, health crises, and career setbacks. She has faced them all, from early motherhood and divorce to job loss and a terrifying incident involving her son. Yet, through every storm, she chose to rise, using each hardship as fuel for growth and transformation. Leslie reminds us that while life may hand us lemons, we can turn them into something meaningful. Whether it’s tamales, a new career, or a fresh perspective, there is always a way forward. Join me as I walk in Leslie’s shoes.

Tomorrow

In this heartfelt episode of Other People's Shoes, I sit down with my good friend Mike Oppenheim from the podcast Coffin Talk. Mike has become a true friend in this podcasting space, and today he shares a deeply personal journey about anger, grief, and missing his son. He opens up about the invisible weight he carries—how, on the outside, you might not see the pain etched into his heart, but it's always there, shaping his days. Mike's story is a raw, emotional exploration of love, loss, and the resilience it takes to move forward. Through our conversation, we unpack the layers of his grief, understanding how it intertwines with hope and the belief in eventual reunion. As part of this episode, I wrote a poem titled Tomorrow, inspired by Mike's experience. It captures the enduring love of a father for his son, the ache of absence, and the unwavering hope for a reunion. Join me as I try on Mike's shoes.

Knocking On Doors

It’s a peaceful Saturday, and you’re finally catching up on your favorite show when Alexa interrupts: “Someone is at the front door.” Annoyed, you shuffle over, expecting a salesperson—but it’s not. It’s Jehovah’s Witnesses, clutching their familiar pamphlets. You hesitate, wondering whether to answer. Today, my guest is Amber, a fifth-generation Jehovah’s Witness who made the life-changing decision to leave the faith. Her story is one of courage, heartbreak, and self-discovery as she stepped away from a belief system deeply rooted in her family’s history. Why did she leave? What was it like to break away from a faith that defined so much of her life? Amber shares her powerful journey, offering an eye-opening glimpse into life inside—and outside—the Kingdom Hall.

Wait...

This season, I’m diving into the theme of X-Ray "sight beyond sight," exploring the unseen damage and resilience in our lives. It’s about uncovering what lies beneath the surface, understanding our struggles, and discovering the beauty in how God works through even the most challenging moments. As I embark on this journey, let these words resonate with you: "While I'm waiting, I will serve You. While I'm waiting, I will worship. While I'm waiting, I will not faint. I'll be running the race even while I wait." Today, I’m honored to welcome my guest, Kim Patton, author of the book Nothing Wasted: Struggling Well Through Difficult Seasons. Difficult seasons catch us off guard and make us feel like life won’t ever make sense again. On my worst days, it’s hard to believe that God will guide me through the mess. Even on my good days, when I feel I have done all the right things, I sometimes wonder: Why am I working this job? Am I making a difference? How do I know the way to go? Why can’t I seem to be content? In Nothing Wasted, Kim Patton takes us on a journey of hope and faith. She shows how we mature over time, how like fog dissipating, we begin to see how God gently leads us through each season of our lives. We may be struggling, but we are moving forward. My faith is not unseen. My moments are not wasted. All the pain that comes in these seasons does lead to a full, rich life, growing in relationship with God and with others. Kim’s story and insights are a powerful reminder that even when life is falling apart, God is still at work, weaving a story of redemption and purpose. Do you embrace difficult seasons and trust that nothing is wasted in God’s hands? Join me as I walk in Kim's shoes.

I Want A Horse

What’s the greatest Christmas gift you’ve ever received? For many, it might have been a pony or a horse—a dream for countless children. For our guest Kim Tschirret, founder of Hope Reins in Raleigh, horses were more than a gift; they were a lifeline. Growing up in a home marked by her father’s alcoholism and a lack of unconditional love, Kim found solace and safety in her horse. While her father prioritized performance and horse shows, Kim longed for a deeper bond—a relationship that planted the seeds for Hope Reins. Today, Hope Reins is a ministry that "Inspires True Hope and Real Healing," offering a place where children and families can encounter Jesus, who meets them in their brokenness and brings restoration. For Kim, the journey of founding Hope Reins has brought her personal healing and a profound experience of God’s love. This growing community of grace is making a tangible impact across the Triangle and beyond, providing a space where love, healing, and transformation come to life. Saddle up! Join me as we try on Kim's shoes.

It's A Wonderful Life Sort Of...

What is your favorite Christmas Movie? One of my favorites has to be "It's A Wonderful Life". In *It's a Wonderful Life*, George Bailey discovers his worth and the profound impact of his life on others. Guided by an angel, he sees a world without his influence, realizing how deeply his choices matter. Similarly, *Homecoming*, the 18th season of *Other People’s Shoes*, explores returning to places of safety and belonging, reminding us of the unseen value of our lives and connections. This idea resonates with John Graham and the Good Samaritan Home, a non-profit that has been offering ex-offenders housing and support since 2001. From one remodeled house to 17 homes in Dayton, Ohio, they’ve helped over 1,000 people rebuild their lives through faith and kindness. Just as George learns that brokenness can lead to redemption, the Good Samaritan Home shows that broken lives, like broken houses, can be restored. Join me as I walk in John Graham’s boots.

Neil Matthews

🎬 Producer | 🎙 Host | 🎧 Editor | ☕ Coffee Connoisseur

I don’t just *orbit the orbit*—I *launch into the unknown*... exploring every galaxy of shoes I can find! From cosmic sneakers to stellar sandals, I’m on a mission to step into lives, stories, and perspectives that expand universes and illuminate hearts.

Fueled by my faith in Jesus, the gravitational pull of my amazing wife Elizabeth, and my unwavering loyalty to the University of North Carolina, my journey began in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina but found its trajectory in Southern Oregon. Every day, my curiosity propels me to suit up and dive into the cosmic sparks that ignite people—their passions, struggles, and victories.

I founded *Other People's Shoes* with an interstellar vision: to help listeners across the globe view life through new dimensions. Inspired by Elizabeth’s encouragement and my belief that empathy can traverse even the vastest voids, my podcast is a space where stories are shared, connections are formed, and lives are transformed, one step—or light-year—at a time.

After all, when you step into *Other People's Shoes*, you open a portal to a universe of insight, compassion, and growth. Every episode is an invitation to fasten your boots, ignite your thrusters, and take a walk through perspectives that just might change your world. 🌌👟

Samaritan’s Feet believes that a new pair of shoes can provide a tangible foundation of hope and the opportunity for a better life, prompt children to focus in school and families not to worry, and protect feet to decrease the possibility of getting a foot-borne disease.
